Flashback Post: Last October, Thanksgiving, and the Lancer Chokecherry Festival

It’s already getting darker and colder when I take my dog out for her morning walk during the week and the leaves are slowly starting to change colour. We still technically have a few days of summer left but I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I can’t wait for fall. At least now I don’t have much time left to wait as it’s practically here. Since it’s pretty much in the air, despite the afternoons of plus 30 Celsius temperatures we’ve been having lately, I figured this would be as good time as any to look back on last fall in anticipation of the coming season as it is one of my favourites. I never can quite pick between fall and early spring as they are almost identical except that they are going in opposite directions.

I remember last year in October the weather was just absolutely gorgeous. It was my first time traveling to the south west corner of our province and it was very nice to be getting out of the city for the weekend. It was also my first time visiting the farm and I remember it fondly. I took this picture outside of Abbey and to me it just demonstrates the beauty and serenity of the prairies that makes me glad to call this place home.

So while the main purpose of our trip to the farm was to have Thanksgiving with my boyfriend’s family, another side feature I later learned was that Lancer has this thing every year called the Chokecherry Festival – and it’s sort of a big deal Image may be NSFW.

this is a statue in the town of Lancer of a chokecherry and a chokecherry blossom. It’s such a big deal in fact that Rick Mercer has mentioned it on his show more than once and I am told the town’s population more than triples in size for this event!

Like any sort of small town event they had a proper parade with lots of candy to be thrown which provided ample opportunity for the adults to visit, which is great because a lot of people come home for this event so it’s a time to catch up with people you haven’t seen in a while.

Of course being from way out of town I didn’t really know any one so I visited as much as I could but was really pleased with the amount of nice classic cars in the parade to keep me entertained as well Image may be NSFW.

In addition to the parade they also had the museum open to visitors, they were serving some great food in the hall, there was a horse shoe competition, but this really made me smile – they had a tractor pull competition! So I had to get a picture of a few of the competitors.

I did a lot of other fun things that weekend besides the Chokecherry Festival, exploring Abbey, Lancer and the surrounding area. I got to know my boyfriend’s family, ate a lot of great food and we spent some time exploring their family farm which I really enjoyed because I spent countless hours on my grandparent’s farm as a child doing the very same thing.

Here is a cool old car we found with trees growing old of the trunk that I just couldn’t pass up taking a picture of. I always find something so poetic about decay and the ravages of time.

Here is a bunch of old equipment lined up at the farm. My grandpa had a similar collection and I used to call his “memory lane” when I was a child and the name just sort of stuck, I think it sort of gave grandpa a bit of a chuckle – I guess I’ve always had a sort of creative streak, and a soft spot for old things of any sort. Might explain my affinity for leafing through Restoration Hardware catalogues!

Here’s a nice shot of an old farm truck in considerably better shape than the car we saw a few pictures back. I just love how blue the sky was that day – it sure made for some striking photographs, we have amazing skies in the prairies. In the background you can see the old house I’ll get to next.

This is an old house they have out on their property and Shawn took me inside to explore it. As some one who appreciates things antique it was quite the adventure! This is the same kind of house you could buy from the Sears or Eaton’s catalogue way back in the day for only $17 and they would send all of the supplies to build it along with a builder and you would have your new house build in about a week. Can you imagine? Of course $17 was worth a lot more back then.

This might seem like an odd picture to take but I was absolutely jazzed when I saw these door knobs inside the house. These are the same style of door knobs that were used inside the farm house my grandparents had that was built in 1914. I also fully appreciated the use of the paneled doors. In more modern homes I’ve been seeing more of a move towards the smooth door which I am sure are easier to clean but I’ve always felt that the paneled door style adds more of a regal presence to any interior design and I am so glad we have them in our apartment.

This is another picture of the interior of the house from upstairs looking down. If you are interested in seeing more there are a bunch in my Flickr feed in the October 2010 folder. I just thought this was an interesting one because it showed how narrow the stairway was and also showed the exposed brick for the chimney. I really encourage you to check out the Flickr folder if you like antiques or even just architecture in general because there really was a lot of interesting stuff in there but this house could really be it’s own post!

This is Barney, the farm dog and my ever gracious tour guide. He likes to look away just as I am about to take the most adorable picture of his face and then he snickers about it I swear. I still think this is a pretty cute picture of him though Image may be NSFW.

Another very cool thing I got to see out on the farm – Shawn’s dad fixes up old radios. Of course that one thing to the right is an old fashioned telephone but he has a bunch of the radios and they are all different and all very neat.

Just a few more of a very nice radios that his dad fixes up – there are more pictures in that October 2010 folder on Flickr if you want to see more, definitely worth checking out.

With a view like this it’s easy to forget that I own a cell phone or that there is an internet – but eventually we have to go home, back to the city, and back to work.

This time we took the ferry home. I am not even sure that I was aware we had ferries in Saskatchewan – but it’s good to learn something new every day! We don’t really need to take it, but it’s an option and since I’d never taken the Lancer Ferry Shawn figured we might as well.

And this is pretty much what it looked like. I was probably the most excited person on that ferry – well it was between me and that little guy from Fall Out on his dash. That’s what my Thanksgiving weekend looked like last year, I’d say it was quite enjoyable. Image may be NSFW.
